| About IDL |
|
|---|
Overview
The Interaction Design Laboratory facilitates research and development in electronic information environments such as digital libraries, electronic publications, distributed courses, and shared work spaces. The IDL aims to develop theories of information seeking and interaction design and supports activities such as: analysis of tasks and user behavior, design and testing of information systems and techniques, and evaluation of existing systems.
You can reserve the usability lab online at: reserve the lab. Please don't mess with other people's reservation.
Equipment
The IDL contains a variety of research workstations and eye-tracking, usability, and video equipment. See equipment for details.
Location
The Interaction Design Laboratory is located on the 4th floor of the library stacks in the School of Information and Library Science in Manning Hall on the UNC Chapel Hill campus. From the SILS library, take the stairs inside the stacks up to the 4th floor (note that the 4th floor of the stacks is between the 2nd and 3rd floors of the rest of Manning Hall). Once on the 4th floor of the stacks, take a right and proceed down the short corridor. The lab rooms are the two doors at the end of the corridor.
Policies
The Interaction Design Lab's Usability Equipment is available to all SILS students and faculty members. Anyone wishing to use the equipment must submit a statement outlining how they intend to use the facility, including:
- A one-page overview of the project
- What resources will be required (usability station, eye-tracker, etc.)
- When and for how long the experiments will be conducted
Other items:
- Hours are the same as the SILS library hours, although special cases will be considered
- Reservations are on a first come, first-served basis
Security policies for IDL computing resources:

- The National Science Foundation
- Microsoft Corporation
- National Aeronautics and Space Administration
- Endeca Technologies Inc.
- The UNC-Chapel Hill Provost's Office
- Intel, Inc.
